KOLKATA: Doctors registered with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have called a nationwide strike on July 15 toprotest against the dissolution of the Medical Council of India. The MCI wasdissolved through an ordinance in May this year after senior officials were charged with corruption.
The daylong strike is expected to hit government hospitals in Kolkata and the districts as the 40-odd IMA branches inthe state will all participate in the strike. “Around 2,000 doctors areregistered with IMA’s Kolkata branch alone. If we take into account allthe IMA branches in the state, the number of doctors participating in the strikewill be very large,” said Dr R D Pandey, president of IMA Kolkata branchand also the senior national vice-president, IMA.
