An initiative to promote Ayurveda globally

BANGALORE: A study aimed at conserving, protecting and promoting Ayurveda globally will be conducted by the St John’s Hospital based National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning in India (NRCLPI) with Bangalore based Government Ayurvedic College and Sri Kalabhyraveshwara Ayurvedic Medical College in collaborating with the Boston University School of Medicine, Boston. “We held talks with the heads of colleges and inspected the college on Tuesday and received a positive response.”Once the funding part is finalised, in a couple of months we will begin with the study. As of now we are on with the preliminary studies,” said Dr Thupill Venkatesh, Principal Investigator, NRCLPI. On his visit to the city for an interaction with the NRCLPI and the college heads, Dr Robert B Saper, Director of Integrative Medicine and Associate Professor Boston University School of Medicine, Boston said, “A holistic approach to ayurveda was used for challenging cases, especially related to stress, diabetes and arthritis.”Dr Robert told Express, “Besides the positive impact, the ayurvedic form of medication, particularly rasashastra, had negative implications as well. The lead, mercury, arsenic and copper contents in such medicines has a negative impact and to know the exact content requirement to avoid any negative implications requires expertise.”"It is at this juncture, a joint collaboration of ayurvedic experts, doctors, scientists and patients will work to carry evidencebased study and further for its conservation, protection and promotion,” he said.

Private participation sought in promoting ayurveda

Kolkata, Dec 27 (IANS) Food Processing Industries Minister Subodh Kant Sahay Monday called for increased participation from the private sector in the growth and development of ayurveda as an alternative system of medicine.

Speaking at the Botanicals in Integrated Health Care Convention 2010 here, Sahay said: ‘We need to fortify the resources for the development of ayurveda and for that purpose private participation is important. Along with the government initiatives private players need to play an active role’.

The three-day international convention, which began Sunday, focuses on bringing ayurveda into mainstream medical practices for its high degree of efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The convention is being attended by representatives of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries along with 300 delegates from various fields like conservation, herbal drug industry, marketing, research and development.

Satyanand Nath Jana received the Motivation Award for Cultivation of Medicinal Plants in Memory of Jagadish Chandra Bose. He has been cultivating various rare species of medicinal plants for the past 25 years.
